The title of the composition also merits special attention, as it evokes a clear connection to early music. “The name… is explained not only by the fact that the text is sacred and the solo instruments engage in a highly independent musical dialogue with the vocal part, but also by the fact that Heinrich Schütz used the term for similar pieces—at a time when sacred music was receiving significant new impulses from secular music.”

Description

Heinz Werner Zimmermann (1930–2022) is regarded as a figure who revitalized Protestant church music after World War II and as one of the most important German composers and composition teachers of the 20th century. The “Geistliches Konzert” (Sacred Concerto) from 1954/1955—now published for the first time—is a work of particular note: partly due to its highly unusual instrumentation (a sacred work for bass-baritone soloist and small jazz orchestra), and partly because it was the first of Zimmermann’s compositions to be performed before a large audience.
