“Bruckner’s so-called Zeroth, which is actually his Second Symphony, was composed in 1869. […] The Zeroth already points musically to the Third Symphony, for example in the idea of the beginning, which develops out of nothing, rising above an empty fifth. There are also musical hints of the 2nd Symphony, such as in the figures of the Scherzo. Even if some of these later symphonies may appear even more elaborate, the Zeroth remains an independent and original early work by Bruckner. […] Like all of Bruckner’s other symphonies, the Zeroth is a masterfully crafted work, full of musical ideas, harmonic richness and vitality.”
